More Facts about Variety

Did you know these things about Variety?

  • Variety. Because some children are extra special. Children growing up with disability, serious illness or disadvantage need help from a special charity. That charity is Variety Australia.
  • With your support, Variety the children’s charity gives more than a million dollars worth of goods and services a month to children with special needs.
  • Each week, Variety New South Wales directly helps hundreds of individual children and families in need—providing practical and much needed grants for items like modified tricycles, electric beds, and communication devices for children who would otherwise ‘fall through the gaps’ and have nowhere else to turn. But we could do more with your help.
  • Over 45,000 children and their families are directly assisted by Variety each year, through our appeals programs, our Children’s Christmas parties and variety@work. Thousands more travel on Sunshine Coaches every day and tens of thousands are treated in hospitals supported by Variety.
  • Every 18 hours a child is born with cerebral palsy (in Australia).
  • Regional and disadvantaged schools receive much needed computers as well as vital learning and play equipment. We also receive thousands of requests for vocal output devices, cochlear implants, myo-electric limbs and other technologies. With your money more special children will be able to hear, find a voice or become mobile.
  • You can make a difference by becoming involved with Variety New South Wales. You can donate money, volunteer your time, or assist in other ways so we can continue doing amazing things for those special children who urgently need our help.
  • Thousands of special children travel on Sunshine Coaches every day, with three new Sunshine Coaches added to the road in Australia every single month. But we want enough on the road to get all our special children out in the sunshine and interacting with people who care. Help us get more Sunshine Coaches on the road.
  • Variety New South Wales offers three core programs:
    • Freedom program – through equipment providing mobility to those who need it most
    • Care for Kids program – through the provision of medical assistance and family support, and
    • Future Kids program – by supporting children in educational, sporting or artistic endeavours and experiences.
  • Variety New South Wales is all about empowering children who are sick, disadvantaged or have special needs to live, laugh and learn.
  • Only 7% of the funds raised by Variety, NSW, goes to administration.
  • Variety is in the process of rolling out its Vision for Life system, which will connect 254 hospitals in NSW to the emergency transport service communication hub. Specialists can remotely connect to the hub from anywhere in Australia, or the world, to not only see the child, but also control the camera and technology to ensure local doctors and nurses are not distracted from the job at hand by the technology.
  • Variety NSW has purchased four vital children’s road ambulances for the Newborn and Pediatric Emergency Transport Service.
  • 14% of the funds raised by Variety, NSW, goes to the Caring for Kids program, supporting children’s health services including hospitals and specialized medical equipment and services.
  • Variety in Australia provided over $3 million in support through educational equipment and fun experiences in 2009 alone.
  • 33% of the funds raised by Variety, NSW, go to the Future Kids program, providing computers, sporting trips, music equipment and therapy to help special needs children.
  • Sunshine Coaches transport children from special schools and other organisations to activities that enable them to interact with their friends and the community.
  • Liberty Swings are donated to communities so children in wheelchairs or with various physical impairments can feel the joys of swinging— a simple pleasure that other children can often take for granted.
  • 46% of the funds raised by Variety, NSW, go to the Freedom Program, providing for mobility equipment, wheelchairs and Sunshine Coaches so that children can get out and about.
  • Almost 60% of all money gathered in NSW goes to regional areas — places where many remote towns with great needs are often overlooked by other services.
  • Since Variety, the Children’s Charity, began in 1975, it has distributed $112 million net to help Australia’s sick, disadvantaged and special needs children.

With your help, Variety could do so much more… donate now… every little bit, big or small, helps.
