It’s our COLOUR DAY – PURPLE – a colour that’s predominant in magnificent, Outback, Queensland sunsets. We’re still crossing Queensland and head to Cloncurry where we haven’t been since the early 90s and they plan on giving us a big welcome.
Map
This shows the area covered during the day, from Longreach to Cloncurry.

Highlights along the way
The shortest route from Longreach to Cloncurry is 527km (about 6 hours driving).
Breakfast
Breakfast will be at the Longreach State School.
Winton
Lunch will be in Winton. Winton is the birth place of Qantas, the home of Waltzing Matilda, and of late the source of major dinosaur fossils finds.
Kynuna
Along the way we’ll be going through Kynuna. It was a staging post for Cobb and Co Coaches. Today Kynuna has just one hotel, the famous Blue Heeler Hotel.
Cloncurry
Cloncurry was the administrative center for the region until Mt Isa became more predominant in the 1960s. Cloncurry is recorded as having the highest temperature in Australia, 53.1C, but that may have been actually a bit lower, around 47-40C. The average temperature in August, when we’ll be there is 29C, thankfully not as high!
Population: 2,900
August 9 is Census Night, so Cloncurry will have an additional 400 or so people on that night than normal for the Census stats!
